Why scan the IVC?

Non-invasive estimate of central venous pressure
Point of care ability to estimate volume status

IVCs small and collapsible (<1.0cm)  are associated with low right atrial/low central venous pressure.

IVCs dilated (>2.5cm) and not collapsible are associated with high venous pressure.
