Where is the IVC and how to identify it

Retroperitoneal
Right of the aorta
Normal size <2.5 cm
Varies w respiration
It is seen coursing through the liver and entering the right atrium (RA) here:

Image is obtained with patient supine and subxyphoid
placement of the ultrasound probe. The probe marker is to
the left and rotated counterclockwise until the heart is located. Then look for the IVC entering the RA.
THE IVC DIAMETER MEASUREMENTS ARE PEROFORMED APPROXIMATELY 2 CM FROM THE IVC/RA JUNCTION BY CONVENTION.

The IVC normally collapses with inspiration and Expands with Expiration. For this reason we may ask the patient to 'sniff' to measure IVC collapsibility. In the video below the IVC is seen near the bottom of the clip and collapses with inspiration. (Note: the IVC is small at the beginning and end of the clip.)
